Guardians vs Rays: ALCS Game 2 Preview & Prediction
The Guardians vs Rays American League Championship Series continues Tuesday night, and the pressure is squarely on Tampa Bay.
After stealing Game 1 on the road with a stunning late-inning comeback, Cleveland has a chance to take a commanding 2-0 series lead back home. For the Rays, a loss would mean heading to Progressive Field needing to win at least two of three just to survive.
Here's everything you need to know before first pitch.

How We Got Here
Game 1 looked like it was going exactly according to script for Tampa Bay. The Rays jumped out to an early lead behind their ace, Drew Rasmussen, and Tropicana Field was rocking.
Then the eighth inning happened.
Nathaniel Lowe delivered the go-ahead single, scoring Chase DeLauter and José Ramírez, and just like that, the Guardians had flipped the script. Cleveland's bullpen slammed the door, and the Rays suddenly found themselves trailing in a playoff game for the first time this entire postseason.
The final score: Guardians 7, Rays 3.
The Pitching Matchup
Guardians: Parker Messick (LHP)
The rookie left-hander gets the ball for Cleveland in Game 2. Messick has been one of the best stories of the Guardians' season, emerging as a Cy Young contender in his first full campaign. But his postseason has been a mixed bag — he lasted just 2 1/3 innings in his ALDS Game 4 start, struggling with command.
The concern here is workload. Messick has thrown 193 innings between the regular season and playoffs, well above his previous career high. He hasn't exceeded five innings in a start since September 16. Cleveland doesn't need a complete game — they just need him to keep the Rays within striking distance and hand things to a bullpen that was magnificent in Game 1.
Rays: Freddy Peralta (RHP)
Tampa Bay acquired Peralta at the trade deadline, and it's safe to say the change of scenery worked. After posting a 4.99 ERA with the Mets, Peralta put up a 3.25 ERA in 10 starts with the Rays, including a September where he went 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA and won AL Pitcher of the Month.
He was solid in the ALDS against the Yankees, giving up just one run in 4 2/3 innings. The Rays need him to be more than solid on Tuesday. They need him to be the guy who dominated September — because a loss here puts Tampa Bay in serious trouble.
Three Storylines to Watch
1. Can the Rays Respond to Adversity?
This is uncharted territory for Tampa Bay. They swept the Yankees in the ALDS and hadn't trailed at any point this postseason until Monday night. This is a young team without much playoff experience. The veterans — Peralta, Cedric Mullins, Nick Martinez — need to steady the ship. If the moment is too big for the kids, this series could slip away quickly.
2. Cleveland's Bullpen Workload
The Guardians' relief corps was heroic in Game 1, throwing five innings of one-run ball. But this is a group that also logged heavy innings during a grueling five-game ALDS against the White Sox. Closer Cade Smith has now appeared in all six Cleveland playoff games over a 10-day span. There's only so much fuel in the tank. Messick giving them length on Tuesday would be enormous.
3. Tropicana Field Pressure
Tampa Bay was the best home team in baseball during the regular season (57-26 at the Trop). They haven't lost back-to-back home games since... well, it's been a while. But the Guardians just proved they can win in this building. If Cleveland jumps out early, you have to wonder how the home crowd reacts. Tense doesn't even begin to describe it.
Prediction
The Rays are too good and too well-rested to roll over. Peralta has been excellent since arriving in Tampa Bay, and this is essentially a must-win game for his team. Expect Tampa Bay's offense to be more patient against Messick, who has struggled with walks in October.
Cleveland's magic this postseason has been undeniable, but asking a rookie starter to outduel Peralta on the road with a taxed bullpen behind him is a big ask.
Rays 5, Guardians 3
Series tied 1-1 heading to Cleveland.
